Camino del Norte

Connection to the Camino del Norte

The Camino de Norte is another recognized pilgrimate route to Santiago de Compostela. It is also sometimes called the Coastal Route, as the Camino Francés is sometimes called the Interior Route. The Camino del Norte meets up with the Camino Primitivo, the pilgrim route beginning in 800 A.D to Santiago de Compostela.

In Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port some pilgrims prefer to head towards the Camino de Norte which begins in Irun, a Spanish/French border town with Hendaya on the French side

Two routes will take you to Hendaye from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port:

  • GR 10, a mountain trail with 5 stages to Hendaye
  • Via Nive-Bidassoa. A route with signs in four stages with less altitude gain than the GR10.
