Lourdes

Camino of Piémont

The pilgrimage to Lourdes is relatively new compared with the ones to Santiago de Compostela. It is less than a century old. Nevertheless, it has taken on such relevance for many Christians that many of the pilgrims on their way to Santiago opt to dedicate a couple days to passing through Lourdes.

In medieval times pilgrims walked from sanctuary to sanctuary. For that very reason to choose Lourdes as the beginning or end of the Camino may have special significance.

Lourdes ↔ Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

Leaving from Lourdes, take the Via de Piemont (GR78) and then the GR65, arriving in Staint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in 7 stages. The recommended stops are Asson, Arudy, Oloron Ste Marie, Hopital-St-Blaise, Mauleon, St Just Ibarre and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

In the other direction, leaving from Sint-Jean-Pied-de-Port towards Lourdes, is also a highly recommended option.
